  Governor Jon Corzine on July 17 signed legislation overturning State regulations that would have allowed municipalities to charge a tax of 8 percent to 10 percent on nonresidential development and added substantial new costs to businesses that want to relocate or expand their facilities.

  NJ sustained a loss of 4,200 private-sector jobs in June, bringing the State's total losses in the private sector to 14,400 jobs for the first half of the year, according to data released today by the NJ Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development.
  New Law Averts Huge Business Tax Hike
  Legislation that would prevent an automatic $350 million payroll tax increase on employers received final legislative approval in the Assembly on June 19 and was immediately signed into law by Governor Jon Corzine.
  Legislature Passes Moratorium on
Marina Access Regulations
  The Legislature voted recently to put a two-year moratorium on DEP regulations impacting public access to tidal waterways at marinas. The legislation impacts new rules requiring property owners to provide public access to tidal waterways. Marinas made the case that they have an obligation to protect their clients' personal property and should be exempt from the regulations. NJBIA supports the bill, but believes these protections should be expanded.
  Permit Extension Sent to Governor Corzine
  Projects delayed by the economic downturn would not lose their existing permit approvals under legislation that has gone to the Governor for his signature.
  Governor Signs Six-Week Paid Leave Law
 

Despite tremendous business opposition, Governor Jon Corzine on May 2 made good on his pledge to sign legislation making NJ only the third state in the nation to provide all employees with up to six weeks of paid family leave.

  Small Companies Hardest Hit as Health Insurance
Costs Double in Six Years for NJ Employers
  Employer health insurance costs rose by an average of 9.4 percent to $7,139 per employee in 2007, extending a period of high health-plan inflation that has seen costs double for many employers over the past six years.
