CSIT To Collaborate on Virtual Conference Spotlighting Opportunities for NJ’s Innovation Economy During COVID-19

The New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology (CSIT)  will collaborate with the Rutgers EcoComplex in hosting a virtual conference on Oct. 14 and 15 to highlight resources and opportunities available to members of the Garden State’s innovation economy during COVID-19. Leaders from New Jersey government, industry, academia, and the investment community will focus on strategies for accelerating innovation as the state begins to emerge from the pandemic.

New Economy, New Jersey: A Look At Innovation Indicators And New Jersey’s Economic Future

Henry Paul, a graduate student at the Fels Institute of Government, analyzes the current state of New Jersey’s innovation economy using state-level Science and Engineering Indicators provided by the National Science Foundation so that the Commission for the New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology to better understand the position of NJ’s innovation economy.

Useful Stats: Agency SBIR/STTR Awards by State, 2009-2019

An SSTI analysis by Colin Edwards reveals that for the 10-year period from 2009 to 2018, two federal agencies were the top contributors to SBIR/STTR spending in every state and the District of Columbia. “Consideration of a state’s trends in the distribution of SBIR awards by federal agency may help program leaders and policy makers optimize the design and performance for state and regional support of innovation-based startups…”

China Again Boosts R&D Spending by More Than 10%

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) finds that China continued its years long run of double-digit percentage increases in spending on R&D in 2019, but the nation is likely to fall short of a long-standing goal of increasing R&D expenditures to 2.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) by this year.

Moody’s: Coronavirus Drives New Business Models, Disruption for Higher Ed

A new report released last week by Moody’s Investors Service finds that the coronavirus pandemic will accelerate a transformation in higher education’s business model, with many universities building out online capabilities and expanding nondegree and certificate programs. These changes are expected to be highly disruptive in the next year or two, but bolster credit prospects for the sector as a whole.

Rutgers Selected as Site for COVID-19 Vaccine Clinical Trial

New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) has been selected by Moderna as one of over 90 sites across the United States to recruit adults to volunteer for the COVID-19 vaccine trial (known as the COVE Study) that will test the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine in approximately 30,000 participants nationwide. The Moderna trial is being conducted at New Jersey Medical School and University Hospital and at other institutions throughout New Jersey in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health.
