The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is preparing a draft plan to reduce food waste and is offering NJBIA members the opportunity to share their thoughts regarding the legislation or what an implementation plan might contain. The plan is part of legislation signed last year (S-3027 from the 2016-17 legislative session).

The goal is to reduce the amount of food waste generated in New Jersey by 50 percent by 2030.

The draft plan is expected to be completed by late July or early August followed by three required hearings on it by late August. DEP is reaching out to a limited number of interested parties within the food supply chain: retail and food services, restaurants and caterers, production and manufacturing, etc. to get their input before a draft plan is made public.

You can read the requirements of the bill here.
