U.S. cabinet officials attended the recent groundbreaking for the Northeast Supply Enhancement Pipeline (NESE), a $1 billion project to transport natural gas from Pennsylvania to New York City via pipes beneath Raritan Bay and New York Harbor.

NESE is an expansion of Williams’ Transco pipeline system across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York that will add 400,000 dekatherms per day of capacity. The project will provide enough energy to serve the equivalent of 2.3 million homes in New York. NESE remains on track to be in service by the fourth quarter of 2027.

Although the project does not serve New Jersey utility customers, the state will benefit economically from the construction phase of the project, including direct and indirect job creation and an increase in state and local tax revenue, Williams said last November after the permits were approved by New York and New Jersey regulators.

According to a fact sheet from Williams, NESE will deliver $1.8 billion in economic development to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York and directly support about 2,000 well-paying jobs in the Northeast.

The New Jersey portion of the project includes 3.4 miles of new 26-inch diameter pipeline in Old Bridge and Sayreville (the Madison Loop); 6.2 miles of a 26-inch diameter pipeline offshore New Jersey (the Raritan Bay Loop) and the construction of a natural gas compressor station (Station 206) in Franklin Township.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum participated in the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday held on the grounds of a former World War II naval air station on the coast of Brooklyn.

“This project is a win-win: natural gas is a reliable, low-cost, clean burning option for New Yorkers to heat and power their homes and businesses,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said. “President Trump, Secretary Burgum, Administrator Zeldin and I will continue fighting to build more energy infrastructure so that all Americans have access to affordable, reliable, and secure American energy.”
