Earlier this week, NJTV Correspondent Leah Mishkin focused on the plight of gyms in New Jersey, which have been closed for five months and still have no indication when Gov. Phil Murhpy will let them reopen.

“These are people’s livelihoods that are being compromised, so it was stressful for us to have to make decisions like that,” said Kevin Caballero, the regional marketing manager for Planet Fitness. He said the company has gone from 300 to 11 employees at 18 locations in North Jersey just to stay afloat.

NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka told Mishkin that the fitness industry employs 53,000 people in the state and time is running out for many places to stay in business.

“We can have public health and economic health mutually work together if we do it in a safe and responsible manner, and I know these health and fitness centers are committed to doing that,” she said.
