The New Jersey Business Coalition, a group of more than 100 leading business and nonprofit groups throughout the state, issued the following statement calling for the safe reopening of all New Jersey businesses that currently remain closed.

“The New Jersey Business Coalition is pleased to see movement toward the reopening of New Jersey’s casinos on July 2. The casinos are a significant economic driver of New Jersey’s economy and our tourism industry.”

“With our public health data continuing to trend in the right direction, we expect that other indoor activity businesses will also be given the green light to begin opening at limited capacity within the same timeframes.

“The thousands of Main Street and small businesses that remain closed under EO 107 can no longer withstand the loss of ongoing revenue and must be given the opportunity to reopen, as long as they can do so in a responsible manner.

“These businesses and nonprofits are deserving of the chance to show they are capable of exercising the same safety precaution protocols that are being used by other reopened businesses.”

3 responses to “NJ Business Coalition Urges Safe Reopening of All Businesses”

  1. Cliff Zukin says:

I saw your statement today calling for a more widespread business opening, as I read the statistics of an increasing level of the virus nationwide and in the state. And, I though, are you blind, deaf, or just dumb? I know that economic and health concerns need to be balanced. But I really don’t think it’s responsible to advocate a heavier foot on the throttle, given the available data.

    • NJBIA says:

      Cliff,

Thanks for the note. The position of the 100 business groups signed on to this statement is that all businesses who can operate safely and follow the guidelines, should have the same opportunity to resume their livelihood. We have asked repeatedly for data that determines why a casino, as an example, can open at limited capacity with guidelines, yet a dance studio, as another example, cannot.

Of course, we are aware the numbers from around the country. But we have never advocated for anything more than the opportunity for businesses to reopen safely, following proper CDC guidelines. There are many inconsistencies as to who is allowed to open and who needs to stay closed, at limited capacity. Frankly, without data behind these decisions, we find these choices to be arbitrary. And after three months of little to no income, with the livelihoods of business owners on the line, it’s time to give them their opportunity.

Do you have any idea where Yoga Studios fall in the reopening plan? Haven’t seen any info on that. Thanks Kula Yoga & Wellness
