Many unwanted spam phone calls and texts are illegal. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says they’re already the top consumer complaint at the agency, and complaints about robocalls and texts with fake or “spoof” caller IDs are on the rise.

The website Smallbusiness.com has put together a list of resources for blocking and combating these calls.

“Small businesses — including those using both landline and mobile devices — can use the following resources to file complaints and learn more about what you can do to combat spam calls and texts,” the site says.

Meanwhile, the FCC does act on complaints: “The FCC is committed to doing what we can to protect you from these unwelcome situations and is cracking down on illegal calls in a variety of ways,” including hundreds of millions of dollars in fines, allowing companies to block calls, and working with phone companies to improve protections.
