On this past weekend’s Minding Your Business on News 12+, NJBIA Deputy Chief Government Affairs Officer Ray Cantor joined Bob Considine to discuss NJBIA’s ‘Rethink RGGI’ awareness campaign to change New Jersey’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), while still improving the state’s air quality and reducing energy costs for consumers.
“Our generators have to bid into the system based on having to pay for RGGI,” Cantor said. “They therefore are less economic; their costs are much higher than Pennsylvania, than Ohio, than West Virginia, who’s not in RGGI, and, again, so their units stay on, their dirty cheaper units stay on, [and] our cleaner, more expensive, units shut off.
“As a result of this, we’re paying a lot more into the system and the end result, ironically, is we have more carbon emissions at the end of the day.”
NJBIA’s “Minding Your Business” is a weekly TV show and the winner of nine Telly Awards over the past four years, including 2026 awards in the Government Affairs and General Health categories.
