Retail energy supplier WGL Energy Services, which expanded into New Jersey in 2025, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. The company now serves customers across seven jurisdictions in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.

Since its founding, the company has provided natural gas, electricity, and renewable energy solutions while successfully navigating three decades of change in an increasingly dynamic and competitive energy marketplace.

Created on July 22, 1996, in Northern Virginia, WGL Energy was founded at a time when states first opened electricity and natural gas markets to retail competition, positioning the company at the center of the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland (PJM) Interconnection, which is one of the nation’s largest wholesale electricity markets.

The company currently serves customers across Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

WGL Energy provides customized energy solutions to a diverse customer base that includes commercial and industrial organizations, government agencies, universities, small businesses, and residential customers, helping them achieve procurement, budget, sustainability, and pricing objectives.

“Thirty years in the retail energy industry is not just a business milestone, it is a reflection of the relationships that made it possible,” said Peter Ledig, president of WGL Energy. “The trust of our customers, the strength of our partnerships, and the dedication of our employees have been the foundation of our success. As we celebrate this anniversary, we remain committed to serving our communities and helping customers meet their energy goals.”

WGL Energy’s long-term success is reflected in the strength of its people, partnerships, and community involvement:

Employees represent nearly 800 years of combined service at the company, with many team members serving for more than two decades and one employee having been with the company since its inception.

More than 1,300 commercial customers have maintained relationships with WGL Energy for over 20 years, reflecting long-standing trust and reliability.

Employees contributed more than 500 volunteer hours in 2025 to local nonprofits and community organizations and are continuing that momentum through 2026.

WGL Energy also continues to support customer sustainability goals through renewable energy products, including Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Carbon Offsets.

As the company looks ahead, WGL Energy remains focused on strategic growth, market expansion, affordability, community engagement, and delivering value to customers throughout the region.

WGL Energy is an NJBIA member with a New Jersey office in Mount Laurel.
