The state Division of Taxation reminds business owners and tax practitioners that next month it will launch Phase 1 of its switch to a new online NJ Tax Portal aimed at streamlining monthly and quarterly payments, including state sales taxes. Some tax filing and payment systems will be temporarily shut down during the upgrade.

Beginning April 26, taxpayers will be unable to file returns or make payments online for the initial list of 20 different taxes covered by Phase 1, however, they can still view their prior filings and payments for informational purposes. Online filing and payments for taxes covered by Phase 1 will resume on the new NJ Taxpayer Portal when it launches May 14.

During the transition period, all returns and payments for taxes covered in Phase 1 that are due between May 1 through May 30 will receive a 30-day extension. This extension will be granted without incurring any penalty or interest for taxes. For example, a tax if a tax is due May 20, the business will have until June 20 to pay the tax without penalty or interest.

Here are the 20 different taxes covered in Phase 1 of this project:

Any taxpayer who files and pays the taxes covered under Phase 1 can create a profile to use the Tax Portal, beginning on May 14. Filing for other taxes, such as Income Tax, will be added to the Portal in subsequent years.

The Division of Taxation noted that the current telephone-based tax filing system for the sales tax will be permanently discontinued on April 26.

Action Required for Portal Access

Business owners and tax preparers will need the following to set up an account on the new NJ Tax Portal to access key features and manage filings.

  • Taxpayer ID;
  • Line 1 of a recently filed return; and
  • The four-digit

Portal accounts are not mandatory for filing, but it enables smoother, faster processing, including viewing account history and securely storing information for future filings, and the ability to request account assistance directly from within the portal.

The state will make available user guides, FAQs, and videos, starting May 14, to help taxpayers set up and navigate the new portal.
