One of the most important priorities of effective leaders is building the strategic relationships needed to successfully navigate turbulent times, according to the experts at NJBIA’s recent “Next-Gen: The New Era of Leadership” program.

“The most important message I want to deliver … is to be more intentional, strategic, consistent and genuine, working every day to build, foster and strengthen relationships because they matter more than ever when things get difficult,” said Steve Adubato, an Emmy award winning broadcaster, author, and leadership coach.

NJBIA President Michele Siekerka, who leads the state most influential organization for New Jersey job creators, sat down with Adubato for a wide-ranging fireside-chat-style discussion to share their practical tips and tools for leading change in uncertain times.

Leaders need to focus on the tasks that only they can handle and learn to delegate the rest, even if it initially makes other members of their team uncomfortable with the new responsibility, Adubato said. Doers are important in an organization, but leaders need to make their people “get comfortable getting uncomfortable,” he said.

“You have to push those things to other people, push them into their uncomfortable zone, so that you have more time, more energy, to focus on the things that only you can do – especially in crazy times like these,” Adubato said.

Adubato is the author of six books and the creator and host of “Lessons in Leadership,” which airs on News 12+. Go here to watch the entire discussion, which was taped on April 4 in Red Bank at NJBIA’s “Next-Gen: The New Era of Leadership” program.
