The nonprofit Groundwork Elizabeth is inviting cyclists of all ages and skill levels to take part in the 21st Annual Tour de Elizabeth, a fun 15-mile recreational bike ride that takes place rain or shine on Sunday, May 19 throughout the City of Elizabeth.
The event starts promptly at 9 a.m. at Elizabeth City Hall, located at 50 Winfield Scott Plaza. Online registration remains open until May 17, but walk-up registrations will be allowed on the morning of the event during the rider check-in period, which begins at 7 a.m.
This is the 21st year Groundwork Elizabeth will be bringing together hundreds of cyclists to support the nonprofit’s efforts to build a greener and more sustainable community. The event draws riders from all over the U.S. to pedal on car-less streets and explore the scenic parks, waterfront paths, businesses, and historic neighborhoods of New Jersey’s fourth-largest city.
“The Tour de Elizabeth continues to emphasize the spirit of community, inviting cyclists of all ages and backgrounds to pedal together along the 15-mile journey throughout our city,” said Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “This isn’t just a bike ride, but a celebration to keep pedaling forward together.”
This year’s theme, “Riding with Heart,” promotes physical health and social awareness. To sign up, visit www.groundworkelizabeth.org. The first 500 registrants receive a Tour de Elizabeth T-shirt, and every rider will be entered into a free raffle for post-event prizes.
Cyclists should be able to ride at a moderate 10 mph pace and must wear helmets throughout the ride. Bicycles and helmets can be rented from Unlimited Biking. No scooters or training wheels are permitted.
Elizabeth police officers will be on hand throughout the route to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for all riders.
The ride is organized by Groundwork Elizabeth with the support of the city and county. Lead sponsors include Elizabethtown Gas, Community Access Unlimited, Union County Savings Bank, the Housing Authority of the City of Elizabeth, New Jersey Council of Humanities, Koplin Auto Body, Quattro Realty, David and Linda Levenberg, and many others.
