Year 20 of the 21st Century is upon us, and it seems that the challenges facing business are as intimidating as ever.

In its latest podcast, the pollster Gallup invited Johnny C. Taylor Jr., president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), to offer insights into changing workplace norms and how businesses can navigate the country’s major societal and political shifts.

For those who don’t know, SHRM is practically a trade association for human resource professionals, or as Taylor explained, SHRM is to HR what the American Bar Association is to lawyers. It has 310,000 members across the globe.

“We (SHRM) now have really broadened our purpose,” Taylor told podcast host Mohamed Younis.  “Why do we exist? It’s now to focus on all things work. We want to be relevant to everyone, not just HR professionals.”

That means dealing with issues like the war for talent, the #MeToo movement, workplace culture, diversity, and political and cultural polarization.
