NJBIA PRESS RELEASE: The average consumer will spend $900 on the holidays this year, and businesses will hire 640,000 seasonal workers to keep up with last-minute shoppers, according to the latest “info-graphic” produced by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association.
“Between Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve, the end of the year is a feast of celebrations for many Americans,” said NJBIA Director of Economic Research Nicol Nicola. “It’s a great time to connect with family and friends, and, like most other holidays, it has a significant economic impact.”
“Many businesses count on holiday shopping to boost their annual revenue, whether it is stores looking for sales or restaurants and caterers booking parties and dinners,” Nicola said. “As our economy improves, we think more businesses will have reasons to be jolly this year.”
Americans will spend more than $650 billion this year, and if last year’s pattern holds, retailers in the food and beverages, electronic shopping and mail-order, and warehouse clubs and superstores sectors will see the most business.
