New Jersey finds itself in the middle of the road in terms of state and local sales tax collections per capita, according to a new study by the Tax Foundation.

The Garden State ranks 23rd with $1,177 in state and local sales tax collections from fiscal year (2018), the most recent complete data available.

The highest state sales tax collections per capita were found in Hawaii ($2,694), the District of Columbia ($2,128), Washington ($2,118), Nevada ($1,941), Louisiana ($1,852), and South Dakota ($1,702).

The lowest state and local sales tax collections per capita were found in Alaska ($335), Vermont ($660), Virginia ($651), West Virginia ($753), Maryland ($781), and South Carolina ($783).
