Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin has announced that Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-7) and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson (D-15) have been named to committee chair positions to fill vacancies created by the departure of several legislators from the lower house.
Murphy has been named chair of the Assembly Health Committee. Reynolds-Jackson will chair the Assembly Education Commitee. They will serve in temporary capacity for the remainder of the current legislative session, Coughlin said.
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-20), who previously served as Majority Conference Leader, has been nominated to the role of Speaker Pro Tempore, replacing former Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly who has been selected to replace former Senator Nellie Pou in the upper house. Assembly members will vote on nominations during the Jan. 30th voting session.
Assemblywoman Linda S. Carter (D-22) has been promoted to the Majority Conference Leader role, joining the senior leadership team of the Assembly.
Coughlin has also named Assemblywomen Shama Haider (D-37) and Tennille R. McCoy (D-14) as Deputy Conference Leaders.
“Each of the leaders being named today brings expertise, passion and strategic vision to their new roles,” Speaker Coughlin said Wednesday. “I am grateful for the work they have done and look forward to their further contributions in the Assembly. Together, we will work to advance legislation on issues including affordability, economic security, public safety, and improvements to health and education.”
