Bestwork Industries for the Blind, a Cherry Hill nonprofit that provides training and job opportunities for the blind and visually impaired, has launched an initiative to create a Blindness & Low Vision Services Center (BLVSC) to help those with vision loss.
To raise funds for the new BLVSC, which will include a full-service low-vision clinic, an assistive technology center, and vocational rehabilitation services, Bestwork is hosting “Dining in the Dark” at Adventure Aquarium in Camden on Oct. 2. The fundraiser will be emceed by the Philadelphia Eagles Insider, Dave Spadoro, host of the “Eagles Insider” podcast.
The goal of the BLVSC is to provide underserved populations, especially people who are experiencing vision loss or are newly blind, with access to vision screening services as well as essential resources such as training in orientation and mobility, life and business skills, and adaptive technology, as well as referrals to specialists when needed.
“Currently, South Jersey has a limited number of low vision service providers," said Jon Katz, president & CEO of Bestwork Industries for the Blind. “The state provides minimal free eye screening sites, with limited scheduling times. Bestwork is committed to bridging this gap by providing free eye screenings with flexible scheduling times.”
Salus at Drexel University and Bestwork Industries announced their partnership to create the BLVSC at a signing ceremony held in January at the Salus/Drexel Elkins Park, Pennsylvania campus. Emily Vasile, assistant professor in the Blindness and Low Vision Studies, Division of Global, Interprofessional and Specialized Programming at Salus/Drexel, is the university’s point person working with Bestwork on the project.
“Dining in the Dark” will raise funds for the BLVSC, as well as help increase awareness about the challenges faced by people with vision impairments. During dinner, guests will wear blindfolds and learn techniques to navigate their plates from Bestwork staff and tablemates who may be blind or visually impaired.
The event also includes a cocktail reception, live entertainment by Jimmy and the Parrots, a silent auction and raffle prizes. All proceeds from the event will be used to establish the center.
