There was no sugar coating this one.

When Colonial Bakery in Lavallette posted a surveillance video of a group of young men stealing a crumb cake off a rolling shelf after midnight on Monday, Facebook followers of the Jersey Shore favorite responded en masse to help identify the thieves.

The owners said on social media that if the bakery bandits returned to the shop, publicly apologized and paid for the cake loss, they wouldn’t press charges.

Sure enough, on Wednesday, the confectionary culprits had come forward, privately apologized and paid for the cake – so there was no knead for the police.

Alli O’Neill, a co-owner of Colonial Bakery who has taken part in several NJBIA press conferences in support of small businesses over the years, told New Jersey Business Today that she and her co-workers were “humbled by the support of the barrier island to help find the ‘crumb cake caper’ via sharing on social media.”

“With everyone’s help we were able to identify the men that stole a pan of crumb cake while the overnight crew was working and have them repay what was owed,” O’Neill said.

“We hope they learned how stealing from small businesses really affects us personally and they will think twice about pulling another stunt like this in the future.”
