In light of shifting federal budget priorities, the Jersey Shore Partnership is calling on policymakers to maintain robust funding for beach replenishment, a long-standing investment vital to the safety, economy, and environmental sustainability of New Jersey’s coast.
Funding cuts for beach replenishment projects, which are crucial to protecting coastal communities and driving tourism, are affecting several New Jersey communities. Projects scheduled for this year in Avalon, Stone Harbor and Ocean City are currently on hold because federal funding is no longer available.
“For nearly three decades, federal, state, and local leaders—across administrations—have partnered effectively with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure our beaches are strong, storm-resilient, and welcoming to residents and visitors alike,” Grace Hanlon, executive director of the Jersey Shore Partnership said on Monday.
While the current appropriations process reflects a shift in priorities and funding mechanisms, Hanlon noted that this is not without precedent.
“We recognize that different administrations bring different approaches. We remain hopeful that this process will result in a revised and improved path forward for coastal protection,” Hanlon said. “The Trump administration has previously supported infrastructure that protects American communities, and we believe coastal resilience deserves similar attention—especially as shoreline erosion, storm threats, and tourism-related pressures continue to increase.”
Hanlon emphasized the importance of bipartisan collaboration, stating, “These are not partisan issues—they are practical, long-term investments that safeguard homes, businesses, and entire communities.”
She also urged mayors and local leaders to remain actively engaged. “With federal support under review, it is important for mayors and local leaders to check in regularly with their legislators—at both the state and federal levels—to make clear that replenishment funding must be prioritized. Personal outreach and advocacy play a powerful role in shaping outcomes.”
“The Jersey Shore is a national treasure,” Hanlon added. “We look forward to working with federal leaders in both parties—and with the Trump administration—to ensure we remain protected, prepared, and prosperous.”
