NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka issued the following statement regarding the signing of bill A-573 into law today by Gov. Phil Murphy.
The legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak (D-18), modifies certain standards for inspection processes under the State Uniform Construction Code Act.
“NJBIA thanks Governor Murphy for signing this bill into the law and the sponsors and Legislature for their full support. We greatly appreciate both working with the business community and construction industry on this legislation.
“This law provides a more expeditious process for obtaining construction inspections, which is greatly needed to avoid unnecessary delays for certificates of occupancy.
“As we know, building a home or development can be expensive and time consuming. Delays caused by the inability to obtain local inspections only drive up those costs. This law will help eliminate some of these delays by establishing an expedited program to ensure inspections are done within three business days.
“It implements this process by leveraging the private sector, similar to the way the successful Licensed Site Remediation Professionals program operates to help effectuate timely cleanups of contaminated sites in New Jersey. And it does so while still being protective of public health and safety.
“We look forward to more successful collaborations between the Murphy administration’s new permitting and regulatory group and the business community as we continue to encourage other ways to bring relief from other similar types of avoidable burdens.”
