Rowan University has hired veteran government affairs specialist David Weinstein as vice president for government relations and chief government relations officer, effective Sept. 18.

Weinstein, who at Rutgers University holds the title of vice president, State Government Affairs & Policy, will work with state and federal officials and agencies, identifying opportunities crucial to building upon Rowan’s rapid transformation as a top 100 public research university.

“David’s deep and broad experience working with state and federal officials will help Rowan drive toward R1 research status,” said Rowan President Ali A. Houshmand. “His insights will help us better serve our students, give opportunities to our researchers, and grow the economy of the region.”

Awarded by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, R1 indicates the highest level of research activity. Rowan currently holds R2 status.

Houshmand noted that strong government relations are especially important in the current phase of the University’s development. Rowan, which in 2023-24 celebrates its centennial year, has nearly doubled enrollment over the past 10 years to more than 22,000 in-person and online students–the country’s 4th fastest growing research institution. It boasts a diverse and impactful research portfolio, has two medical schools and is developing New Jersey’s first veterinary school.

“Rowan’s incredible growth is going to have a far-reaching impact on New Jersey in the coming years,” said Weinstein. “I am excited to join Rowan at this pivotal point in its history.”

Formerly a journalist with the Associated Press, Weinstein was also an advisor to former Gov. Chris Christie before working at Rutgers.

A Rowan alumnus with a master’s degree in public relations, Weinstein will report directly to Houshmand and serve as a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet.
