Lt. Gov.-elect Sheila Oliver will also be the next Commissioner of the NJ Department of Community Affairs. Gov.-elect Phil Murphy made the appointment yesterday, filling the first cabinet position since winning election on Tuesday.
NJ.com noted that Oliver is a former Assembly speaker who worked in municipal and county government and served as an Essex County freeholder. Oliver will run the department that oversees local governments across New Jersey.
The office of lieutenant governor in New Jersey was created just over eight years ago. The legislation establishing the office also states that the lieutenant governorwould also head an executive department or agency. Outgoing Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, who has served for two terms as the first lieutenant governor, also serves as Secretary of State.
Oliver will be only the second lieutenant governor in New Jersey history.
