A Raritan Valley Community College student recently won the national NFOS College Bowl contest at Vision Expo East, a four-day event for ophthalmic professionals that drew over 240 exhibitors and more than 5,000 visitors to New York City’s Javits Center.

Judy Quinones, who works part-time as an apprentice optician and will graduate from RVCC in May with an Applied Science Degree in Ophthalmic Science, not only won the College Bowl contest held April 2, but she also shattered the record for the highest point total. The College Bowl Trophy will be on display in the RVCC Optical Clinic for the next year.

The NFOS College Bowl, sponsored by global eyewear manufacturer EssilorLuxottica, is an annual competition between representatives of opticianry programs affiliated with the National Federation of Opticianry Schools. It is a quiz-show type competition that features questions in anatomy and physiology of the eye, dispensing, fabrication, contact lenses, and optics.

RVCC, located in Branchburg, offers students an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Ophthalmic Science; an Ophthalmic Science Certificate – Apprenticeship Option program; and an Ophthalmic Laboratory Technician Certificate of Completion – Apprenticeship Option.
