Unless you’re a small business owner.

Your employees are no doubt taking some much-deserved time off this summer. But what about you? If vacations are important for employees to recharge and come back to work refreshed and ready to go, doesn’t that go double for the stressed out small business owner?

Fact is, many small business owners don’t think they can afford to take a vacation. But Rieva Lesonsky, CEO of GrowBiz Media, thinks this is a mistake. Writing for Allbusiness.com, she lays out the steps small business owners can take so they can rest easy while taking a vacation for themselves.

“As the song goes, ‘Summertime, and the living is easy’—but for small business owners, it’s not always easy to take time off from your business in summer,” Lesonsky says. “Business doesn’t always slow down when the temperatures rise, and you may feel torn between having summer fun and keeping your customers happy.”

But you don’t have to. Prepare your staff and your customers for your absence and choose a vacation type the fits your personality. If you have to keep in touch, there are plenty of apps out there that will help give you peace of mind but still allow you to have your downtime.

“Many entrepreneurs get their best ideas on vacation,” she concludes. “Who knows? You could have your next big brainstorm while lying on the beach.”
