The underground infrastructure carrying New Jersey’s water, sewerage, gas and electricity is in a horrendous state of disrepair, argues Stacie Curtis, founder and president of the real estate firm CW Solutions.
“I can say with confidence that our underground infrastructure is at a breaking point,” Curtis writes in an op-ed published recently in the Daily Record and My Central Jersey. “If we do not invest in upgrading our underground infrastructure, it will only be a short matter of time before a critical infrastructure failure leads to a public health and safety crisis.”
Water suppliers estimate that New Jersey loses 33 percent of its drinking water each year just through old, leaking underground pipes. The cost of doing nothing, Curtis says, becomes far greater than the $650 billion over 20 years needed to repair water systems.
