The Impact of Below Replacement Birth Rates and
Global Population Decline
Below replacement birth rates are spreading in countries all over the world, including the U.S.
- How will this development and the resulting global population decline affect future immigration to the US?
- Will immigrants find themselves treated as a precious commodity by advanced economies?
- Or will societies learn to adapt to smaller populations or possibly succeed in raising birth rates through the spread of natalist values?
These are vital questions that deserve careful attention. This webinar will bring together experts on these topics to help us prepare for potential transformational change.
NATURE OF THE PROGRAM: The program will consist of three speakers and one moderator.
The first speaker will be Nicholas Eberstadt, who holds the Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute and is the author of a recent publication entitled “World Depopulation: Prospects and Implications.” Dr. Eberstadt will discuss current and future birth rates in the U.S. and around the world and their expected impact on global population levels.
The second speaker will be Leah Sargeant, Senior Policy Analyst at the Niskanen Center. An expert on effective policies to promote marriage and childbirth, Leah will evaluate worldwide efforts to increase birth rates and suggest strategies to prevent disastrous population loss in the U.S. and around the world.
The final speaker will be Jack Malde, Associate Director of the Economic Policy Center at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Jack will discuss ways in which immigration might rectify population loss and how advanced economies might compete for shrinking numbers of immigrants.
