Atlantic Shores has received final federal approvals needed to construct two offshore wind farms in federally regulated waters 8.7 miles off the New Jersey coast near Atlantic City.

Atlantic Shores South Projects 1 and 2 will include up to 200 offshore wind turbines, offshore substations to collect the electricity produced, and the associated cables buried beneath the seabed that are needed to transport electricity to shore. Combined, the two wind farms will generate enough renewable energy to power more than 1 million New Jersey homes.

The projects received construction and operations plan approvals from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on Tuesday, as well as a Clean Air Act permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The projects already have the needed approvals from New Jersey regulators and could begin construction as soon as 2025.

“Atlantic Shores is thrilled to receive approval to build our first two projects and deliver sufficient clean power to serve one third of New Jersey households,” said Joris Veldhoven, CEO, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind. “Securing these critical approvals enables New Jersey’s first offshore wind project to start construction next year and represents meaningful progress in New Jersey achieving 100% clean energy by 2035.”

The federal approvals will enable the near-term creation of thousands of in-demand jobs and acceleration of billions of dollars in supply chain investments in New Jersey, the company said.

Atlantic Shores South will be on the Outer Continental Shelf in the Atlantic Ocean and generate about 2,800 megawatts of clean, renewable power. Undersea transmission cables will connect to New Jersey’s electrical grid at two points in Atlantic City and Sea Girt.
