Due to recent events surrounding COVID-19, many businesses are operating on a limited capacity or have ceased operations completely. The Census Bureau has monitored response and data quality and determined estimates in this release meet publication standards.

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for June 2020, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $524.3 billion, an increase of 7.5% (± 0.5%) from the previous month, and 1.1 % (± 0.7 %) above June 2019.

Total sales for the April 2020 through June 2020 period were down 8.1 % (± 0.5 %) from the same period a year ago. The April 2020 to May 2020 percentage change was revised from up 17.7 % (± 0.5 %) to up 18.2 % (± 0.3 %).

Retail trade sales were up 6.4 % (± 0.5 %) from May 2020, and 5.0 % (± 0.7 %) above last year. Non-store retailers were up 23.5 % (± 1.4 %) from June 2019, while building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers were up 17.3 % (± 2.1 %) from last year.
