On this past weekend’s edition of NJBIA’s “Minding Your Business,” Ralph Albert Thomas, CEO and executive director of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA) discussed the efforts and need to bring more diversity into the accounting field.
While accepting an African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey Circle of Achievement Award last month, Thomas said that out of more than 500,000 licensed CPAs in the U.S., only 2% are black.
Thomas said at least some of this is “attributable to the fact that many underrepresented minorities don’t know about accounting.”
For its part, NJCPA makes dozens of trips to high schools throughout the year to get students engaged in accounting as a career.
During his conversation with host Bob Considine, Thomas also discussed his wish list for New Jersey’s FY22 budget.
