Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo proposed a $171 million budget for Fiscal Year 2020, a decrease of $1.1 million under the fiscal year FY 2019 adjusted appropriation of $172.1 million.
Asaro-Angelo highlighted the Department’s efforts to improve the service constituents receive when they apply for unemployment, family leave or temporary disability insurance benefits. He also emphasized the Department’s efforts to address worker misclassification.
Asaro-Angelo announced that the unemployment tax rate moved from Column C to Column B for FY 2019, resulting in employers saving about $263 million dollars. It’s possible that there will be another column shift from B to A in the near future, saving employers an additional $200 million for FY 2020.
